NIT Srinagar conducts ARI screening camp in collaboration with DTC

Over 200 students, staff members screened

An Acute Respiratory Infection (ARI) screening cum awareness camp was conducted at the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Srinagar organised by the District Tuberculosis Centre (DTC) Srinagar in collaboration with the Institute’s Medical Unit.

The initiative was held to strengthen surveillance and early detection of respiratory infections on the campus.

According to officials, the camp focused on identifying symptoms related to ARI, with winter months generally witnessing a higher prevalence of such illnesses.

The programme was aimed at ensuring the timely screening of students and staff to prevent complications arising from delayed diagnosis.

A team of healthcare professionals from Block Hazratbal and the District TB Centre carried out the screening process.

The visiting team comprised Dr. Seema Ashraf, Medical Officer, UPHC Hazratbal; Dr. Tufail Ahmad, Medical Officer, UPHC Hazratbal; Mr. Nasir Ahmad, Senior Treatment Supervisor; Mr. Tariq Bashir, Senior  Laboratory Supervisor; and Mr. Tariq Imam, Health Visitor.

The overall activities were supervised by Dr. Zeenat Farooq, Consultant at UPHC Hazratbal, who monitored the screening procedures and awareness measures conducted throughout the day.

Officials said over 200 students and staff members were screened during the camp. The screening included symptom-checking, basic clinical assessments, and dissemination of information on preventive measures, early reporting of symptoms, and available diagnostic facilities for TB and other respiratory infections.

Dr. Gawhar Nabi, Medical Officer, NIT Srinagar, said the screening exercise was part of routine health preparedness at the institute.

“Respiratory illnesses tend to increase significantly during winter. Screening helps in early identification and timely referral for treatment. The turnout shows that the campus community recognises the importance of such initiatives,” he said.

Dr. Gawhar also acknowledged the support of Director, Registrar, DSW, faculty coordinator, Security Officer, DTC Srinagar, and the team from UPHC Hazratbal for facilitating and conducting the camp,” he said.

Dr. Seema Ashraf, Medical Officer, UPHC Hazratbal, said the response indicated improved health awareness among students.

“More than 200 screenings in a single day reflect good participation. Early detection remains the most effective way to address infections prevent their spread,” she said.

Health officials said the camp was conducted under standard protocols and in coordination with field-level surveillance teams. They added that such screening and awareness activities are part of ongoing district-level outreach programmes aimed at reducing the burden of respiratory diseases.
