Kisan Divas (National Farmers’ Day) celebrated in Kargil
KARGIL DECEMBER 23, 2020: Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Kargil-I in collaboration with Horticulture Department today organized Kissan Divas (National Farmers’ Day) at Krishi Vigyan Kendra Kurbathang, Kargil.
Executive Councillor (EC) for Horticulture Aga Syed Hassan Armaan was the chief guest on the occasion.
During the course of the daylong event which was attended by the extension workers from Agriculture, Horticulture and other line departments besides farmers from different corners of the district, speakers spoke about the importance of farmers’ day, role of Indian farmers in boosting the country’s economy and various issues related to farmers and cultivation.
The speakers also gave suggestions and solutions, information related to various government policies, use of new techniques and use of scientific methods to increase crop yield.
EC Horticulture Aga Syed Hassan Armaan in his address while lauding the contribution of the farmers for the society appreciated KVK Kargil-I for having organized the event despite severe cold and expressed optimism that participation in this awareness programme will prove fruitful in enlightening the farmers about the potential and scope of agriculture in the district.
Underlining the importance of apricot in farmers economy in the district, the EC said that it is the main cash crop which adds to more than 40 % of the national production out of which 60% goes waste which is a matter of great concern.
The EC while distributing 30 certificates to 30 farmers recognizing 30 different varieties of apricot in Kargil under Protection of Plant Varieties & Farmers Rights Authority, said that this shows that Kargil has a great potential of apricot production and to enhance its productivity and its by- products, there is a dire need for setting up of a National Research Centre for Apricot in the district.
Aga Armaan also advised farmers to remain in touch with KVK Kargil-I for regular guidance and technical know-how about the advancements in agricultural production techniques and said that there should be a proper coordination between KVK and the line departments, adding that to strengthen this coordination a committee at the level of LAHDC will be formed soon.
The EC further said that Government has various schemes for farmers’ welfare including easy bank loans. He asked the farmers to take benefit of these schemes which he said would help them become economically stronger.
Meanwhile, Principal Scientist KVK Kargil Dr Mehdi Akhone said that going organic is the best way to increase the economy of the farmers and to do so they have to cooperate with the departments and should understand the ways and means to turn organic.
Meanwhile, during the Kissan Goshti held on the occasion both men and women farmers’ shared their experiences of farming and made the scientists aware about the problems being faced by them while adopting the new technologies.
Pertinently, the National Farmers’ Day in India is also known as Kissan Divas in Hindi. The day is celebrated every year on 23 December on the birthday of the 5th Prime Minister of India, Choudhary Charan Singh, also a farmers’ leader, who introduced many policies to improve the lives of farmers in the country.
