Chandigarh, August 26
Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Punjab Senior Leader and MLA Principal Budh Ram, Deputy Leader of Opposition Sarabjit Kaur Manuke, Rupinder Kaur Ruby, Manjit Singh Bilaspur, Kulwant Singh Pandori and Master Baldev Singh (All MLAs) have demanded that all the debts of farm workers and the landless poor they owed to private finance companies at high interest rates be waived off. The government in the saddle should set up a regulatory body or enact law to fix interest rates.
In a statement issued from party headquarters on Wednesday, the AAP MLAs said that due to the anti-people policies of the governments, the landless and farm hands in the state had been already overburdened with heavy debt and were falling into the trap of private finance companies, which was why every working family had an average debt worth more than Rs one lakh per head.
Principals Budhram and Sarabjit Kaur Manuke said that poor laborers and landless people were forced to lead a miserable life due to government apathy and were constantly under trap of private finance companies, while the government was unconcerned about them.
Manjeet Singh Bilaspur and Rupinder Kaur Ruby said that Punjab Government should crack a whip on these private finance companies which were fleecing the people of the state. Master Baldev Singh and Kulwant Singh Pandori on the occasion said the government should set up a regulatory authority to rein in these private companies charging high interest rates on their loans from the landless and farm workers. They added the Amarinder Singh Government had promised a complete debt waiver ahead of assuming power in 2017 but the promise had not been fulfilled.
The leaders said that Aam Aadmi Party was a staunch supporter of the workers’ struggle on this issue and would fight tooth and nail till the time the government was agreed to a complete waiver of debts of the workers and harassment of these beleaguered workers was not stopped.
