B6 vitamins slows anxiety and depression

According to a new study, taking high amounts of vitamin B6 supplements help lessen the symptoms of anxiety and sadness. Young adults who received high doses of vitamin B6 for a month reported feeling less anxious and depressed, according to researchers at the University of Reading.

The study provides strong evidence in favour of using supplements to treat or prevent mood disorders that are thought to affect levels of brain activity.

The precise interaction between inhibitory neurons, which control excessive behaviour, and excitatory ones, which carry information, is essential for the brain’s capacity to function.

Recent theories have connected mood disorders and other neuropsychiatric diseases with disturbance of this equilibrium, frequently in the direction of increasing levels of brain activity.

Our research shows that taking vitamin B6 causes the body to create a particular chemical messenger that blocks brain impulses and has a calming impact on participants. The focus of the current study was on the potential role of vitamin B6, which is known to enhance the body’s manufacture of  Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid an agent that suppresses impulses between brain nerve cells.

According to the study, vitamin B6 created a statistically significant difference during the trial, but vitamin B12 had no impact in comparison to the placebo.

The notion that B6 was the reason for the reduction in anxiety was supported by visual tests. Minor, safe fluctuations in visual performance were consistent with controlled levels of brain activity.

Many different meals, including tuna, chickpeas, and various fruits and vegetables, contain vitamin B6. However, the huge doses used in this trial suggest that additional supplements could be needed to have a positive impact on one’s mood.

However, given that they have fewer adverse effects than pharmaceuticals, consumers may decide to use nutrition-based treatments in the future.

Different dietary interventions that focus on nutrition can help improve mental health, and one approach is to combine cognitive behavioural therapy with vitamin B6 pills to increase the effectiveness of both.
