CHANDIGARH
Diabetes is growing in India with almost 20 million patients above the age of 60 as per the recent Longitudinal Ageing Study in India (LASI). This problem further creates complications such as heart attack, heart strokes, among others. To treat the causes and to prevent future complications, everyone needs to search and know about this widespread illness mostly in the old age population.
Further, a common misconception about being diabetic is that the patient has to compromise on the delicious food or their favourite foods. Adults however manage to sacrifice their munching but for the older population it becomes difficult to follow a balanced diet plan due to age factor.
But the reality is that they don’t have to give up all their favourite food, they just need to limit some food items for their diet chart.
Basic routine a diabetic patient should adopt to start a day is with a glass of lukewarm water as it will help to flush out all the toxins present in their body. In addition, you can also have a teaspoon of soaked fenugreek seeds to balance your blood sugar levels.
However, diabetic patients can eat these foods for better health:
- A cup of coffee/tea/buttermilk with vegetable chila
- A bowl of dalia with vegetables
- Wheat flakes with milk
- Vegetable oats/upma
- 2 slices of whole wheat bread, add an omelette of white part of egg with green tea or a cup of milk.
- Almonds- Eat a handful of almonds in a day for your better health results.
- Yogurt- Eat one bowl of plain yogurt in your lunch as it is good for your sugar level.
- Smoothie- Good at making smoothies, then add yogurt, fruits and milk in lesser amounts.
- Strawberries- Either eat strawberries in mid-morning or make strawberry smoothies and prefer to drink them at breakfast.
- Banana- Eat a banana and a cup of milk in the evening or as per your taste or time.
- Brown bread- Use brown bread instead of white bread. Brown bread is a multi-grain bread which does not increase the blood sugar level in the body.
- Peanut butter- To change your taste, you can eat peanut butter with 2 slices of bread, paired with a cup of green tea.
- Kiwi- Kiwi is a fruit which gives you energy and is less sweet.
- Black beans- Go for black beans in your lunch or dinner.
- Low fat cheese- Despite eating high fat cheese, which adds extra calories to the body, it’s better to switch to low fat cheese.
- Cucumber- A must in your salad. Don’t skip salad before lunch as well as before dinner.
- Tomatoes- Tomatoes increase the blood circulation and also helps in controlling the sugar level in the body. You can add one tomato in your salad part.
However, diabetic patients should avoid these foods for better health:
- Chips
