(Says this was being done because of the resurgence of the SAD in the Tarn Taran bypoll and Block Samiti and Zila Parishad elections)
Chandigarh, 7 January 2026
Senior Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Parambans Singh Romana today said chief minister Bhagwant Mann was politicizing the issue of 328 ‘saroops’ despite agreeing with the Bhai Isher Singh committee report which clearly stated that no ‘saroop’ of Sri Guru Granth Sahib had been stolen but that the issue was only of the required donation not been deposited in the Shiromani Committee treasury while distributing the ‘saroops’ to gurdwara committees and devotees.
Addressing a press conference here, Mr Parambans Romana said after some employees approached the high court when their services were terminated by the SGPC for distributing ‘saroops’ without authorization, the AAP government had submitted that the Shiromani Committee had already taken action in the matter as the apex religious body of the Sikh community and that no further action was required on behalf of the government.
Asserting that chief minister Bhagwant Mann had now apparently changed his mind and was bent on politicizing the issue, Mr Romana said “this is because of the changed political equations in the State following the resurgence of the SAD in the Tarn Taran byelection as well as elections to Block Samitis and Zila Parishads. He said the government had intervened in the case despite a clear directive from Sri Akal Takht that this was an internal matter of the Sikh community and that no government agency should interfere in it.
The Akali leader said it was unfortunate that ‘patit’ people were now trying to teach the community what was right and wrong. He said even the chief minister had no right to propound on the issue considering the fact that he had been accused by the ‘sangat’ of participating in religious programmes on two separate occasions after imbibing liquor. He said while Bhagwant Mann seemed very worried about the ‘saroops’ and even held a press conference on this issue , he had never held a press conference on the worsening law and order situation or the State’s finances.
Mr Romana also accused ‘ragi’ Baldev Singh Wadala of indulging in politics on the issue at the instance of the AAP government asserting the latter’s complaint had been procured to make this an election issue years after the incident. He said the very fact that AAP minister Harjot Singh Bains had visited Amritsar and directed the police to register a case in this regard had made it clear that the entire case had been orchestrated by the AAP government. Mr Romana also objected to the manner in which officers had been handpicked to lead the SIT in the case adding these officers included tainted police officer Gurbans Bains, the brother of an AAP leader from Patiala – DSP Beant Juneja and SP Harpal Singh who had been accused of facilitating the assailant who attacked SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal in the Sri Darbar Sahib precincts.
The SAD leader also highlighted how one of the accused in the ‘saroop’ case – Jaspreet Singh Jild Daar had been appointed a Chairman of the Amritsar Planning Board by the AAP government. He said the government should clarify how this had happened and why no action had been taken against Jaspreet Jild Daar.EOM
