In strict compliance with the directions issued by the Hon’ble Chairperson of the Punjab Pollution Control Board and under the guidance of the Commissioner, Amritsar, a special awareness and sensitisation programme on prevention of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) burning was organised today at the Municipal Corporation Amritsar.
The programme was jointly organised by the Punjab Pollution Control Board in collaboration with the Municipal Corporation Amritsar and witnessed the active participation of 128 waste workers and horticulture workers. During the session, Ms. Swati Dey interacted directly with the field staff and sensitised them about the serious environmental damage and public health risks caused by open burning of municipal waste.
The participants were categorically directed to adopt a zero-tolerance approach towards MSW burning, remain vigilant at vulnerable locations, and immediately prevent and report any such incidents. Special emphasis was laid on strengthening field-level monitoring, timely lifting of waste, source segregation, and scientific management of solid waste in accordance with the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016.
The programme was attended by senior officials including the Sh. Surinder Singh (PCS), Assistant Commissioner, Amritsar, Er. Kamaljit Singh Virdi, Environmental Engineer, Zonal Office Amritsar, Dr. Kiran, Health Officer, Municipal Corporation, Amritsar, Er. Sukhmani Singh, Assistant Environmental Engineer, Regional Office, Amritsar, Er. Lakhwinder Kumar, Assistant Environmental Engineer, Regional Office, Amritsar and Er. Yuygadveer Singh, Junior Environmental Engineer, Regional Office, Amritsar reflecting strong inter-departmental coordination and administrative resolve.
The municipal staff assured full cooperation and strict compliance with the directions issued. The Punjab Pollution Control Board reiterated that such awareness, capacity-building, and enforcement initiatives will continue regularly to address public grievances, improve air quality, and ensure a cleaner and healthier environment for the citizens of Amritsar.
