FORMER CM CONDEMNS REPRESSION AGAINST PEACEFUL PROTESTERS<\/strong><\/p>\n

Chandigarh October 2-<\/strong> Five time Punjab Chief Minister Parkash SIngh Badal today asked the Governments of India as well as of the state to follow a policy of consensus and constructive conciliation rather than repressive confrontation on sensitive national issues. \u201cThe country\u2019s image must not be disfigured through intolerant governmental approach\u201d said Mr Badal.<\/p>\n

Mr Badal said that the entire state was enthused yesterday by \u201cthe Panthic fervor in the Akali wave to support our beleaguered farmers. This was a great spectacle for those who cherish democratic Panthic traditions.\u201d<\/p>\n

In a statement here, the country\u2019s most senior statesman reminded the government of the need for consensus, saying, \u201cConfrontation, especially violent confrontation, was dangerous and harmful in a country which prides itself on its rich diversity. \u201cThis diversity must not only be preserved but genuinely respected and promoted by everyone tasked with shaping our nation\u2019s destiny.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mr Badal emphasized the need for respecting genuine cooperative federalism on the one hand and democratic dissent on the other. \u201c A healthy respect for our religious, linguistic, regional and political diversity is the cornerstone of our Constitution and only a democratic and federal approach can make us a global political, economic and moral leader of the new world,\u201d said Mr Badal.<\/p>\n

The Akali stalwart described as \u201cshocking and utterly uncalled for\u201d last night\u2019s repressive use of force by the police against Akali workers peacefully agitating for the farmers. \u201cThere was nothing unconstitutional or abnormal in protesters\u2019 behavior or demands. It is everyone\u2019s fundamental right to be heard through peaceful democratic manner\u201d he said, reiterating that in the Governor\u2019s shoes, he would have walked barefoot to meet the peaceful agitators<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
