\nPresident of India graces the diamond jubilee celebrations of India International Centre<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

DELHI\u00a0 :-\u00a0 18 APR 2022\u00a0<\/strong><\/div>\n

India has had a widespread tradition of \u2018vaad-vivaad\u2019 and \u2018samvaad\u2019. Today, we need to reconnect with that heritage, said the\u00a0President of India, Shri Ram Nath Kovind.\u00a0\u00a0He was speaking on the occasion of the Diamond Jubilee celebrations of India International Centre (IIC) in New Delhi\u00a0today (April 18, 2022).\u00a0The President said that India\u2019s ancient philosophy, called \u2018darshan\u2019, is often acknowledged to be far more subtle and robust than the best of philosophical works produced elsewhere. He noted that the people, especially the youth, are keen to learn more \u2013 not only in terms of facts but also in terms of tools of critical thinking necessary to arrive at truth.<\/p>\n

The President said that when the idea of the IIC was conceived in 1958 as an international platform for exchange of views, the world was coping with issues concerning a fair and stable international order and legacy-burdens of two world wars. The process of de-colonisation was underway in Asia and Africa, with new aspirations influencing the emerging international order. As the contemporary world is going through a phase of transition, forums like the IIC become all the more relevant.<\/p>\n

The President said that\u00a0the founding of this institution\u00a0was done by women and men with a vision of India\u2019s future and its role in a world of international cooperation. The IIC stands for a vision of India as a vibrant democracy where it is possible to initiate dialogue in an atmosphere of amity and understanding, with national and international participation.\u00a0\u00a0The founders of this institution had the\u00a0foresight\u00a0to see what\u00a0could unfold in the years to\u00a0come, and how the IIC could be a part of developments in a new nation and also contribute to debates globally.\u00a0Such\u00a0debates have kept pace with time.\u00a0Since its beginning in the early 1960s, programmes at the Centre have reflected global and national\u00a0concerns\u00a0and continue to create awareness and influence public opinion\u00a0on\u00a0relevant issues. Through its close contacts with prominent academic and cultural institutions\u00a0within and outside\u00a0India, and through its networking with diplomatic missions in the capital, the IIC draws scholars, thinkers and professionals from India and abroad.<\/p>\n

Noting that during its Diamond Jubilee year, IIC has chosen to especially focus on programmes related to women and gender, the President said that\u00a0as we celebrate the 75th anniversary of our independence with \u2018Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav\u2019, let us also highlight the significant achievements\u00a0of\u00a0women and the several legal and social initiatives that seek to bring about change. He said that there are several examples of Indian women who, before and after independence, have shattered many glass ceilings. Let us not forget the\u00a0fearless\u00a0women scientists of the Mars Orbiter\u00a0Mission. Women were among the\u00a0leading\u00a0Corona Warriors who demonstrated\u00a0extraordinary\u00a0resilience and provided healing touch to save\u00a0fellow citizens, often risking their own lives.<\/p>\n

The President said that women\u2019s participation in the unorganised sector of our economy is very high.\u00a0The formal economy needs to do much more\u00a0to\u00a0empower\u00a0women-workforce.\u00a0Women should be encouraged to participate more in what is known as \u2018STEMM\u2019, that is, Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Management.\u00a0National and global\u00a0economies\u00a0stand\u00a0to benefit from their talent and\u00a0their creative\u00a0ways of responding to challenges.<\/p>\n

The President said that\u00a0the\u00a0United Nations Sustainable Development Goal-5 seeks to achieve\u00a0gender equality and\u00a0empower\u00a0all women and girls. We need to eliminate\u00a0structures of violence and exclusion that block\u00a0women\u2019s\u00a0progress and to open all avenues for them so that they\u00a0realise\u00a0their potential in diverse fields.<\/p>\n

The President said that in the Diamond Jubilee year of the IIC, he wished there were hundreds of IICs across India, in\u00a0several\u00a0states and small towns, setting high standards of debate and discussion.\u00a0Just as\u00a0the IIC\u00a0has not remained an ivory\u00a0tower, the new centres\u00a0too\u00a0would be engaged in the task of making the world a better place through the use of reason.<\/p>\n
