I begin by paying tributes to the great Bharathiyar\u00a0\u00a0 on his Jayanti.\u00a0\u00a0 On such a special day,\u00a0\u00a0 I am happy to be taking part in the International\u00a0 Bharati\u00a0\u00a0 Festival.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0I am also pleased to present\u00a0 the\u00a0 Bharati\u00a0 Award\u00a0 for this year\u00a0 to the great Scholar\u00a0 Shri\u00a0 Seeni\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Viswanathan ji ,\u00a0 who has dedicated\u00a0 his entire life\u00a0 to research on\u00a0 Bharati’s\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 works.\u00a0\u00a0 I appreciate him for actively pursuing\u00a0\u00a0 research even\u00a0 at the age of 86!\u00a0\u00a0 How to describe Subramanya Bharathi,\u00a0this is a very difficult question.\u00a0\u00a0 Bharathiyar\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 cannot be linked\u00a0\u00a0 to any single profession or dimension.\u00a0\u00a0 He was a poet, writer, editor, journalist, social reformer, freedom fighter, humanist\u00a0\u00a0 and much more.<\/p>\n

One can only marvel at his works, his poems, his philosophy and his life.\u00a0\u00a0 He also had a close link with Varanasi, which I have the honour of representing in the Parliament.\u00a0 I recently saw that his collected works have been published in 16 volumes.\u00a0\u00a0 In a short life of 39 years he wrote so much, did so much and excelled\u00a0\u00a0 in so much.\u00a0\u00a0 His writings are a guiding light to us\u00a0\u00a0 towards a glorious\u00a0\u00a0 future.<\/p>\n

Friends,<\/p>\n

There is much\u00a0 that our youth today\u00a0 can learn from\u00a0 Subramania Bharati.\u00a0Most importantly\u00a0to be courageous.\u00a0\u00a0 Fear was unknown to\u00a0 Subramania Bharati\u00a0 .\u00a0\u00a0He said:<\/strong><\/p>\n

It means:\u00a0\u00a0Fear I have not, fear I have not,\u00a0Even if all the world opposes me.\u00a0\u00a0I see this spirit in Young India today.\u00a0\u00a0 I see this spirit when they are at the forefront of innovation and excellence.\u00a0\u00a0India’s start-up space is filled with fearless\u00a0\u00a0 youth who are giving something new to humanity.\u00a0\u00a0Such a ‘can do’\u00a0 spirit\u00a0\u00a0 will bring wonder\u00a0 for our nation\u00a0 and our planet.<\/p>\n

Friends,<\/p>\n

Bharathiyar\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 believed in a healthy mix between the ancient and\u00a0 the modern.\u00a0\u00a0 He saw wisdom in staying connected with our roots as well as looking towards the future.\u00a0\u00a0He considered Tamil Language and motherland India as his two eyes.\u00a0\u00a0He sang songs of the greatness of ancient India, the greatness of the Vedas\u00a0\u00a0 and\u00a0 Upanishads\u00a0 ,\u00a0 our culture,\u00a0 tradition\u00a0 and\u00a0 our glorious past.\u00a0\u00a0 But at the same time, he also warned us that simply living in the past glory is not enough.\u00a0\u00a0 We need to develop a scientific temper, a spirit of enquiry and march towards progress.<\/p>\n

Friends,<\/p>\n

Mahakavi\u00a0 Bharathiyar’s\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 definition of progress\u00a0 had a central role for\u00a0 women .\u00a0\u00a0One of the most important vision\u00a0 was that of independent\u00a0 and empowered women.\u00a0\u00a0Mahakavi\u00a0 Bharatiyaar\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 wrote\u00a0 that women should walk\u00a0 with their head\u00a0 held high,\u00a0 while looking people\u00a0 in the eye.\u00a0\u00a0We are inspired by this vision and are working to ensure\u00a0\u00a0 women led empowerment.\u00a0\u00a0It would make you happy that in every sphere of our Government’s working, there has been importance given to dignity of women.<\/p>\n

Today, over 15 crore women entrepreneurs are funded by schemes like MUDRA Yojana.\u00a0\u00a0 They are walking with their head held high, looking us in the eye and telling us how they are becoming self-reliant.<\/p>\n

Today, women\u00a0\u00a0 are becoming part of our armed forces with permanent commissioning.\u00a0\u00a0 They are walking with their head held high and looking us in the eye and filling us with confidence that the country is in safe hands.\u00a0\u00a0Today, the poorest of the poor women\u00a0\u00a0 who used to face problems of lack of safe sanitation, are benefited by over 10 crore safe and hygienic toilets.<\/p>\n

They do not have to face problems any more.\u00a0\u00a0 They can walk with their head held high and look everyone in the eye, as Mahakavi\u00a0 Bharatiyaar\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 has imagined.\u00a0\u00a0This is the era of New India’s Nari Shakti.\u00a0\u00a0 They are breaking barriers and making an impact.\u00a0\u00a0This is New India’s tribute\u00a0\u00a0 to Subramania Bharati\u00a0 .<\/p>\n

Friends,<\/p>\n

Mahakavi Bharatiyaar\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 understood that any society which is divided will not be able to succeed.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 At the same time, he wrote about the emptiness of political freedom which does not address the social inequities\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 and does not address\u00a0 social ills .\u00a0\u00a0 He said, and I quote:<\/p>\n

It means:\u00a0\u00a0Now we will make a rule,\u00a0 and enforce it ever,\u00a0If ever one man faces starvation,\u00a0the world has to\u00a0 atone\u00a0\u00a0on pain of\u00a0 destruction\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0His teachings\u00a0 are a strong reminder to us\u00a0to remain united and committed\u00a0 to the empowerment of every single individual.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Especially the\u00a0poor and\u00a0 marginalised.<\/p>\n

There is a lot our youth have to learn from Bharathi. \u00a0I wish that everyone in our country reads his works\u00a0 and is inspired by them.\u00a0\u00a0I congratulate Vanavil Cultural Center on their wonderful work\u00a0 in spreading the message of Bharathiyar.\u00a0 I am confident that this festival will have productive\u00a0 deliberations \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0which will help\u00a0 steer\u00a0 India\u00a0 into a new future.<\/p>\n
