\nCommitted to uphold the dignity of women of all sections of society in state, the Punjab government today launched Udaan Project worth Rs 50.55 cr to provide sanitary napkins to all needy sections of society free of cost on the occasion of International Menstruation Hygiene Day today.\"\"
\nThe Minister for Social Security, Women and Child Development Mrs Aruna Chaudhary launched the project through video conference facility. At Barnala, Deputy Commissioner Barnala Mr Tej Partap Singh Phoolka presided over the district level function, while it was beamed simultaneously at 21 locations in the district.
\nMrs Aruna Chaudhary said that earlier education department was distributing sanitary pads to the students from classes 6th to +2. However, many other sections of society were left bereft of this important facility. Now the anganwari workers will provide sanitary napkins to housewives, school drop outs or out of school girls, women from below poverty line families, slum area dwellers, itinerant travellers and homeless women. Each woman will be given nine pads every month. She added that across the state 27,314anganwaricenters will identify 50 beneficiaries each initially.
\nShe added that the Punjab government has already started free bus ride for 1.31 cr women in the government buses to enable them travel easily and safely. Besides this the department has been running a number of schemes that take care of<\/p>\n

women including pregnant women, lactating mothers, 0 to 6 years of kids in anganwaricenters, girl students etc. Also women are being given 33 percent reservation in local governance and 50 percent reservation in panchayati elections.
\nDeputy Commissioner Mr Tej Partap Singh Phoolka said that due to the stigma attached to menstrual hygiene and lack of resources, many women have no option but to use cloth, papers, cotton and other such things when they are on periods. With the launch of Udaan Project, women can now heave a sigh of relief and live a healthy and hygienic life.
\nADC Mr AadityaDachalwal and District Program Officer Mr Kulwinder Singh were also present. The program was beamed live in the villages Harigarh, Kaleke, RurekeKalan, Dhanaula, Chananwal, Chhapa, Gehal, MehalKalan, WajidkeKhurd, Bakhatgarh, Cheema Jodhpur, Mauran, Sehna, Barnala, Handiaya, Bhadaur, Tapa, and Sandhu Patti.
