Chandigarh, December 3

On the occasion of International Day of Persons with Disabilities, Haryana Education Minister, Kanwarpal inaugurated the Ashtavakra Center set up by the Higher Education Department in Pandit Chiranji Lal Government College, Karnal through video conferencing. During this, he also launched the mobile application and website www.ashtavakrakendra.highereduhry.com ‘Ashtavakra Kendra’ in addition to the release of ‘Sparsh’, a monthly magazine of Braille script prepared for People with Disabilities (PwDs). The Education Minister addressed the event from his camp office in Jagadhri.

          During this programme, Principal Secretary, Higher Education Department, Ankur Gupta, Director General, Higher Education Department, Mr. Ajit Balaji Joshi and Principals of various colleges of the state were present.

          Kanwar Pal said that the Department is constantly striving to provide quality education to all students. The National Education Policy emphasizes that disabled children should also get equal opportunities in the educational system. For this, the Haryana Government and the Higher Education Department are making continuous efforts, he added. The Education Minister said that inclusive education has been defined as a system of education, where the disabled and all other students learn simultaneously without any discrimination. He said that Haryana Government is always committed to provide equal opportunities in quality education to students with special needs. Mainstreaming people with special needs, marginalized classes, and girls is the main objective of the State Government, he added.

           Ankur Gupta welcomed the Chief Guest on the occasion. He said that only 9 percent of disabled students complete secondary education. About 45 percent of the disabled are illiterate and only 62.9 percent of PwDs between three and 35 years of age can get regular education in schools. He said that the Haryana Chief Minister had announced to set up this center for deaf children in Karnal.

          Ajit Balaji Joshi said that the Higher Education Department is constantly striving to educate disabled students. So far, around 223 students have been enrolled in various divisions in various courses.
