The ‘One Nation, One Election’ proposal of the union government under PM Narendra Modi is a transformative reform that aims to synchronize Lok Sabha and State Assembly elections across the country. This initiative is expected to bring political stability, reduce electoral expenses, and enhance governance efficiency.

Sat Sharma CA, President, Jammu and Kashmir BJP and the Chief Guest, said this while addressing a massive gathering of the senior functionaries of different social organizations of Ward Numbers 47 and 48 of Bahu assembly segment, in a programme organized by Bahu Fort Development Committee Trust (Regd.) at Bahu Fort, Jammu.

This programme was organized by Kr. Rajeev Charak, Chairman of the Committee and Vice Chairman Adv. Ishant Gupta and Vice president Hardesh Khokhar.

The programme aimed at highlighting the significance of holding elections at different levels at one time across the country.

Sat Sharma said that India, the world’s largest democracy, holds elections frequently at different levels—Lok Sabha and State Assemblies.  This continuous cycle of elections disrupts governance, increases administrative costs, and diverts resources from development work. ‘One Nation, One Election’ idea seeks to establish a synchronized electoral process to ensure better governance and economic progress.

Sat Sharma said that the frequent elections require significant financial and human resources. The Election Commission, security forces, and government machinery are mobilized repeatedly, leading to high expenditure. Holding elections simultaneously would drastically cut down costs.

Priya Sethi, NEM and former minister, said that a single election cycle would ensure better utilization of resources for national security and law enforcement. She said that a single election across the country will encourage higher voter participation, leading to a more representative democracy. She said that our country is almost always in election mode. With 28 states, eight union territories and nearly a billion eligible voters, polls are a constant feature of the nation’s political landscape. One Nation, One election would bring down campaign costs, ease the strain on administrative resources and streamline governance.

The key speaker, Rajeev Gupta CA, also Convenor, ‘One Nation, One Election’ campaign, said that a single election would prove to be a path to stability and development and the people should understand that repeated elections are not healthy for a country with population of 140 crore people. He said that with elections taking place every few months, governments often hesitate to make bold policy decisions due to the fear of electoral backlash. A synchronized election cycle will allow leaders to focus on governance rather than being in continuous campaign mode.

Vivek Patyal, Vice President, Saryara Biradadri presented vote of thanks.
