Chandigarh, 5 June 2026
Haryana Chief Minister Sh. Nayab Singh Saini said that yoga is an invaluable gift of our Sanatan culture, bestowed upon humanity by our sages and saints for the welfare of all. India’s thousands-year-old yoga tradition has today become a source of inspiration for the entire world. There was a time when yoga was considered confined to ashrams and gurukuls, but today it is practiced in almost every country across the globe. This is a testament to India’s cultural strength.
The Chief Minister was addressing a ceremony held at Shri Krishna AYUSH University for the inauguration of the newly constructed auditorium and the foundation stone laying of a women’s hostel. Before the event, Sh. Nayab Singh Saini planted a sapling in the university campus on the occasion of World Environment Day. Along with him, dignitaries, officials, and members of the public also planted around 101 saplings. Thereafter, the Chief Minister inaugurated the University’s Examination Centre-cum-Multipurpose Hall, constructed at a cost of Rs. 9 crore, and laid the foundation stone of a multi-storey girls’ hostel to be built at an estimated cost of nearly Rs. 8 crore.
The Chief Minister also assured that the stipend for students of the AYUSH University would be increased soon.
Sh. Nayab Singh Saini launched the university anthem and released the university’s research journal, the Shodh Ganga portal related to PhD research work, and two publications.
After the university programme, the Chief Minister participated in the Sampoorna Sundar Kand Paath and spiritual discourse organised by Mahamandaleshwar Dr. Swami Shashwat Nand Giri Maharaj at Akhand Gita Peeth Sanatan Seva Ashram Trust.
Sh. Nayab Singh Saini said that Kurukshetra is the centre of India’s spiritual consciousness. It is the land where Lord Shri Krishna delivered the eternal message of karma, knowledge, and yoga to humanity through Arjuna. Quoting the Bhagavad Gita, he said yoga brings excellence and efficiency in action. Therefore, discussions on yoga carry even greater significance when held on the sacred land of Kurukshetra.
He said that the theme of this year’s International Day of Yoga is “Yoga for Healthy Ageing,” which is particularly relevant today as the elderly population continues to grow. Haryana has also incorporated the theme of a “Drug-Free and Yoga-Oriented Society.”
The Chief Minister said that Prime Minister Sh. Narendra Modi strongly advocated for the observance of the International Day of Yoga during his first address to the United Nations General Assembly. Owing to his dedicated efforts, the UN General Assembly passed a historic resolution in 2014 declaring June 21 as the International Day of Yoga. At that time, 177 countries supported the proposal, and today Yoga Day is celebrated in more than 200 countries. As a result, yoga has once again become an integral part of people’s lifestyles.
Sh. Nayab Singh Saini said that while encouraging people to adopt yoga, the Prime Minister has stated that when we begin to live yoga, Yoga Day becomes a celebration of health, happiness, and peace. He added that when the world practices yoga on International Yoga Day, it is not merely performing an exercise but embracing India’s spirit of “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam” (the world is one family). From this sacred land of knowledge and devotion, we are carrying forward that global consciousness.
He described yoga as a complete science for living a healthy, happy, and peaceful life. It is an art of living, and therefore it is rightly said: “Practice yoga every day and stay healthy throughout life.”
The Chief Minister said that the government has taken the responsibility of encouraging the younger generation to learn and practice yoga in Haryana, the land of the Vedas, Upanishads, and the Bhagavad Gita. Yoga has been made a compulsory subject from Classes I to X. Yoga is also being taught in schools, colleges, and universities across the state. Yoga clubs have been established, and the Haryana Yoga Commission has been constituted to promote yoga.
He further said that Shri Krishna AYUSH University was established in Kurukshetra to promote yoga and Ayurveda. A provision of Rs. 135 crore has been made in the current financial year’s budget for the construction of university buildings.
Sh. Nayab Singh Saini said that the government is committed to establishing gymnasiums in all 6,500 villages of the state. Of these, 883 have already been completed, and 859 AYUSH Yoga Assistants have been appointed. Additionally, 397 AYUSH dispensaries and 109 sub-health centres have been upgraded into Ayushman Arogya Mandirs, where 156 yoga instructors have been appointed.
He informed that the National Institute of Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy has been established in Panchkula, while a Postgraduate Institute of Yoga, Naturopathy and Research has been set up in Devrakhana village of Jhajjar district. The current budget also includes a provision for introducing daily yoga breaks for employees in all industrial units. Similarly, weekly health campaigns for senior citizens will be organised at Ayushman Arogya Mandirs to promote healthy ageing.
The Chief Minister administered a pledge to citizens to make yoga an integral part of their daily lives and contribute actively towards building a Healthy Haryana, Prosperous Haryana, and Developed India. He also encouraged everyone to plant a sapling under the “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” campaign and take responsibility for its care and nurturing.
Director General, AYUSH Department, Sanjeev Verma also addressed the gathering. Vice-Chancellor of Shri Krishna AYUSH University, Kurukshetra, Prof. Kartar Singh Dhiman, provided detailed information about the university.
Among those present on the occasion were Deputy Commissioner Vishram Kumar Meena, Superintendent of Police Chandra Mohan, Chairman Dharmveer Mirzapur, Vice Chairman Dhuman Singh Kirmach, Chairman Subhash Kalsana, Chairman Gurnam Singh Saini, and several other distinguished guests.
