Chandigarh, October 1 – Lakhs of Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) workers held a massive Kisan March to the State capital today which witnessed SAD President Sukhbir Singh Badal and former union minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal and the senior leadership courting arrest after being prevented from entering the city to hand over a memorandum  for the President to ask for revocation of the three black laws on agriculture to the State Governor.

The historic Kisan March witnessed a sea of humanity collecting on the outskirts of the city with the two marches from Sri Amritsar Sahib and Sri Anandpur Sahib being stopped at Mullanpur and the March from Sri Talwandi Sabo being stopped at Zirakpur.

The marches also witnessed repression at the Chandigarh border at Zirakpur which resulted in the arrest of Harsimrat Kaur Badal even as senior leader Balwinder Singh Bhundur was manhandled and Youth Akali Dal (YAD) workers led by Parambans Singh Romana were targeted with water cannons besides being brutally lathi charged. Party Kisan Wing President Sikander Singh Maluka was also arrested.

At the Mullanpur border police arrested the SAD President besides Prof Prem Singh Chandumajra and Bikram Singh Majithia besides other leaders after they sat down in protest in front of the barricades after the police refused to allow them to proceed to the Raj Bhawan to hand over a memorandum demanding revocation of the three agricultural laws besides calling for bringing in a law to turn MSP into a statutory right for the farmers.

All the senior leaders as well as workers who were arrested were taken to the sector 17 police station where they held a protest against the Punjab government and the Chandigarh administration and demanded their democratic right to hand over a memorandum to the Governor be respected.

Earlier while addressing a massive congregation which collected at Mullanpur despite thousands being stopped forcibly at Kurali by the Punjab Police, the SAD President said the Modi government was trying to muzzle the voice of the farmers but the SAD would stand with them come what may. “We opposed the black laws in parliament and subsequently left the ministry and even the alliance with the BJP. Today we are standing shoulder to shoulder with the farmers of Punjab. I assure the farmers that the SAD will not only fight for their rights but ensure they remained protected”.

Mr Sukhbir Singh Badal also announced that farmers of Punjab would not allow implementation of the black laws in the State under any circumstances. “We will also not allow corporates to take over the produce of the annadaata”.

The SAD President also took on chief minister Capt Amarinder Singh. He said the chief minister should call an immediate assembly session and revoke the APMC Act which he amended in 2017 to allow private mandis, contract farming and e trading. “We also demand that the entire State be declared as one Mandi to ensure the agricultural laws cannot be implemented in the State”. He also said it was shameful that the chief minister had called a special session to pass a resolution rejecting the Agricultural Bills on August 28 but did not deign it fit to send the resolution to either parliament or the centre till now.

Mr Badal also asked Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to tell Punjabis why he was coming to Punjab to shed crocodile tears at their plight when he had called for scraping the APMC Act in 2019 and had refused to part ways with the Shiv Sena in Maharashtra even when it voted in favour of the Agri Bills.
