I still hope that the decision in the SYL matter will come in Haryana’s favor – Anil Vij
Chandigarh, 7 August 2025
Haryana’s Energy, Transport and Labour Minister Sh. Anil Vij, responding to U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent announcement of a 50% tariff on Indian products, said that Narendra Modi is the Prime Minister of the country and he will not let any affect come to India. On the SYL issue, he added that he still hopes the decision will be in Haryana’s favor.
Sh. Vij was replying to questions asked by media personnel regarding the U.S. President’s statement about imposing a 50% tariff.
He said that “How to deal with the tariff imposed by America is something our Prime Minister is tackling head-on. Efforts are being made to find new markets so that India’s trade remains unaffected in any situation.”

Responding to a question about Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s recent statement in Delhi that “We have no fight with Haryana, but we simply don’t have water”, Sh. Vij said that a recent meeting between the Chief Ministers of Haryana and Punjab on this issue was held in a cordial environment. The matter is now in the Supreme Court. “The previous decision was also in favor of Haryana, and we are hopeful that the upcoming one will be too. Whatever the decision, it should be implemented accordingly,” he said.
Sh. Vij further stated that neither the Haryana government nor the Punjab government can decide how much water each state gets. “There are dedicated tribunals for this, and Haryana is only demanding its rightful share of water based on their decisions. The Hon’ble Supreme Court has also given multiple rulings in favor of Haryana, and the Punjab government should accept and implement those decisions,” he added.
He said that “The Punjab government had called a session of its Assembly and unilaterally suspanded the SYL agreement and de-notified the acquired land, even though the land acquisition payment had been made by the Haryana government. This shows their intentions.” Sh. Vij added that “Punjab’s culture is about serving water through ‘chhabeels’ (free water stalls), and today the same people are blocking Haryana’s rightful share of water.”
