Kullu, May 14, 2022:\u00a0<\/b>The\u00a0Cardiology Team at Fortis Hospital Mohali<\/b>\u00a0has given a new lease of life to\u00a075-year-old Ram Kumari, based in Kullu,<\/b>by treating her for severe artery blockages through\u00a0Fractional Flow Reserve (FFR).<\/b><\/p>\n

The Cardiology Team headed by\u00a0Dr RK Jaswal, Head of Department and Director of Cardiology; and Director, Cathlabs, Fortis Hospital Mohali<\/b>, successfully treated the Patient using the most advanced technology of\u00a0Fractional Flow Reserve (FFR), available 24×7 at Fortis Mohali.<\/b><\/p>\n

<\/a>Fractional Flow Reserve<\/b>\u00a0is used to determine if a cardiac patient needs a stent or a bypass surgery, or should be administered only medicines during treatment. The procedure is performed by a pressure wire introduced inside the narrowed artery and assesses the actual reduction in blood flow in the vessel due to blockage.<\/p>\n

The Patient<\/b>presented with a history of hypertension along with definitive exertional shortness of breath and chest discomfort.A\u00a064 Slice CT Angiography<\/b>\u2013non-invasive test that helps detect blockages in arteries \u2013revealed significant narrowing of the Left Anterior Descending (LAD) artery.She was subsequently admitted to\u00a0Fortis Mohali<\/b>where\u00a0Catheter Angiography<\/b>\u00a0was done on 7th<\/sup>\u00a0May this year.<\/p>\n

Catheter angiography<\/b>\u00a0is an invasive procedure that allows a cardiologist to see how well blood vessels supply blood to the heart.\u00a0 The procedure revealed 70% blockage of the LAD artery. Going by angiography alone, the\u00a0Patient<\/b>was a candidate for stentingof LAD.<\/p>\n

Discussing the case,\u00a0Dr Jaswal<\/b>, said, \u201cFFR was utilized to further evaluate whether the stent will benefit or harm the patient in the long run.\u00a0 Both FFR and Relative Flow Reserve (RFR) established that the\u00a0Patient<\/b>\u00a0could do well without stenting on just medical treatment.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n

The\u00a0Patient\u00a0<\/b>was discharged from\u00a0Fortis Mohali<\/b>\u00a0on the same day. Post treatment, she is doing well and leading a normal life.<\/p>\n

As per medical findings, critical blockages in the arteries with abnormal FFR, if not stented, can pose a risk to life and poor outcome.On the contrary, heart artery blockages with\u00a0FFR\u00a0<\/b>which is not critically reduced can be managed medically through this advanced technique.<\/p>\n

With FFR, about 25-30% of all patients who are otherwise candidates for stenting on the basis of their angiography findings, end up on medical treatment. Therefore, avoiding unnecessary stenting and better long-term outcomes.<\/p>\n

Discussing the advanced treatment option,\u00a0Dr Jaswal<\/b>, said,\u00a0\u201cFFR is available in selected hospitals such as Fortis Mohali. It is highly useful in stenting heart arteries in an objective and ethical way as recommended by international guidelines of repute in the world.\u201d<\/i><\/div>\n
