The FO system facilitates high recovery, low energy consumption, potential for resource recovery, especially in solutions of high osmotic pressure, less fouling of the membrane because of low pressure operation, easier and more effective cleaning of the membrane, longer membrane life and lower operating costs.<\/p>\n<p>Tamil Nadu IIT Madras in collaboration with Empereal \u2013 KGDS Renewable Energy have successfully established and demonstrated this system to address prevalent and emerging water challenges in Mission Mode in the village.<\/p>\n<p>Ramanathapuram\u00a0District,\u00a0situated\u00a0in\u00a0the\u00a0South-East\u00a0corner\u00a0of\u00a0Tamil\u00a0Nadu,\u00a0is\u00a0severely affected\u00a0by\u00a0scarcity of\u00a0potable\u00a0water\u00a0due\u00a0to\u00a0salinity,\u00a0brackishness\u00a0and also\u00a0poor sources of\u00a0ground\u00a0water.\u00a0The\u00a0district\u00a0of\u00a0423000\u00a0hectares has a\u00a0long\u00a0coastal\u00a0line measuring\u00a0about\u00a0265\u00a0kilometres\u00a0accounting\u00a0for\u00a0nearly\u00a01\/4th\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0total length\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0coastal\u00a0line\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0state.<\/p>\n<p>The Water Technology Initiative, Department of Science &amp; Technology (DST) has supported this field based effort in the district through the consortium members led by Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IITM), KGiSL Institute of Technology (KITE), Empereal\u2013 KGDS Renewable Energy (P) and ICT Mumbai.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Forward Osmosis system installed at Narippaiyur Village, Ramanathapuram District, Tamil Nadu<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static.pib.gov.in\/WriteReadData\/userfiles\/image\/image002FX8D.png\" alt=\"\" \/>\u00a0 \u00a0<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static.pib.gov.in\/WriteReadData\/userfiles\/image\/image003LCNL.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>LFR based Solar Thermal System\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Solar hot water system installed at Narippaiyur Village, Ramanathapuram District, Tamil Nadu<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0sea\u00a0water\u00a0FO\u00a0technology\u00a0operates\u00a0at\u00a0near\u00a02\u00a0bar\u00a0pressure\u00a0unlike\u00a0sea\u00a0water\u00a0RO\u00a0that\u00a0operates at\u00a050\u00a0bar\u00a0pressure.\u00a0It\u00a0is\u00a0versatile,\u00a0has\u00a0high\u00a0energy\u00a0efficiency\u00a0and\u00a0low operation\u00a0and maintenance\u00a0costs\u00a0compared to\u00a0other technologies.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0produced\u00a0water\u00a0will be\u00a0supplied\u00a0to the local people with the\u00a0support\u00a0of\u00a0villagers and\u00a0panchayat.
