World Environment Day was celebrated with enthusiasm across various parts of Kargil district, marked by plantation drives and awareness programmes aimed at promoting environmental conservation and sustainable practices.
At Yokat Tsok, Bodhkarboo, the Department of Forest Ecology and Environment organized a plantation drive in the presence of the Block Forest Officer (BFO) and staff of Shakar Chiktan Block. During the drive, a total of 245 saplings, including Kikar, Kashmiri Willow, and Willow (Salix Alba), were planted. The initiative focused on increasing green cover and raising awareness about the importance of protecting natural resources.
Similarly, the Forest Department Kargil, Soudh Block, carried out plantation activities on June 4, 2026, planting 150 saplings at Gurgurdoo Departmental Unit and 50 saplings at Garkone Departmental Unit, contributing to the district’s ongoing efforts for a greener environment.
Meanwhile, the University of Ladakh, Kargil Campus, also observed the day with active participation of students, staff, and officials from the Forest Department. The programme featured awareness lectures by experts on environmental conservation, followed by a plantation drive and community-based activities. The Department of Forests, TSG Block, played a key role in the event, supporting plantation efforts and emphasizing the need to preserve natural resources for future generations.
The celebrations concluded with a collective pledge by participants to work towards environmental protection and sustainable development, reflecting a strong commitment across the district to safeguard the environment.
